I Hate Chicago: In The Gutter with Nick Vandermolen 2011
Nick Vandermolen didn't move to Chicago for the bright lights or the tall buildings. He moved there to confront his biggest fear: the real world. Over the course of his first tumultuous year in Chicago he wrote a book entitled I HATE CHICAGO. The hit book contained essays that chronicled his adaptation into the Windy City, as well as his attempt to reinvent adulthood in the process.
Fast forward to an intended commercial for Vandermolen's newly founded publishing company Nan Bu Nan Books. What started as an innocent bit of PR blossomed into a story of inspiration and oddity as a swarm of local Chicago children descended onto the shoot unprovoked and unrehearsed. I HATE CHICAGO: In the Gutter with Nick Vandermolen reveals an organic discussion of Chicago between children who know nothing different, and a young man who should've. As this short documentary uncovers, age and wisdom are not always mutually exclusive. With honest, unscripted exchanges and hilarious anecdotes, I HATE CHICAGO helps us realize that sometimes, the best teacher is also a student.
